Today’s speaker was Eloise Samuels, President, New Jersey Orators (NJO), Inc.
NJO was founded in 1985 by a group of concerned corporate executives and educators. It began as a grassroots effort in Somerset County to address the literacy and public speaking gaps among minority youth. Over the decades, it has expanded significantly into nine counties with fifteen chapters, mentoring thousands of students.
The organization's mission is to teach the art of public speaking, literacy, and life skills to youth from ages 7 to 18, with a particular focus on African American children and other diverse backgrounds. Through this training, they aim to build self-esteem, enhance academic performance, and prepare students for future leadership roles.
NJO fulfills its mission by hosting weekly workshops where certified volunteer coaches train students in various categories, such as public speaking and persuasive dialog. Participants regularly showcase these skills in local, regional, and statewide oratorical competitions held throughout the academic year.
The organization has received numerous civic accolades for its positive impact on youth development and education, including recognition from state legislators and community foundations. Additionally, its individual student competitors frequently earn prestigious scholarships and top honors at regional and national public speaking tournaments.
